Book: The Family Remains (Sequel to The Family Upstairs)
Author: Lisa Jewell
Rating: ππππ
DCI Samuel Owusu (never Sam, always Samuel) finds himself in the centre of a cold case investigation when a bag of bones is discovered in the river. He connects the case back to a strange house where a suicide pact took place years ago.
Rachel Rimmer has just heard that her husband has been found dead in his home in the South of France. But there are questions about her marriage she is not prepared to answer.
Lucy has just come home, and is trying to settle in when events pull her back into the past. Her intense moody brother abruptly leaves – and when she realises who heβs gone in search of, she feels she has no choice but to go after him.
I enjoyed this – and like most of the thrillers I read, I chose the audiobook version, which was great.
Itβs not mind blowing or really fast-paced (though itβs not slow either!), but if you enjoyed the characters from The Family Upstairs, this is a good opportunity to spend a bit more time with them.
Things get resolved in a way that might perhaps be considered too neat, but I was alright with it.
The thing that Lisa Jewell does best is character development – and Iβm a sucker for interesting fictional people.
So if you’re going to read this, that’s what to expect. Interesting people with a medium pace.
This is an easy comfortable read/listen for when you want to give your brain a break but also meet some very fascinating characters, and hang out more with the family from The Family Upstairs.
Trigger warning: rape / sexual abuse
