Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2
Completed this for the 52 Book Club Reading Challenge Prompt #2 (a kangaroo word on the cover).
Cricket Campbell is in a rut of sorts.
She has been floating aimlessly from one thing to another, most recently an assistant at a gimmicky wellness company.
Things change when her father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis becomes a real and looming threat.
She returns to her father’s Adirondack house, when her sister decides it is time to move their father to a home for caregiving.
Through a series of events, in lieu of placing her father in a home, Cricket finds herself quitting her job in the city and returning home to be her father’s caretaker.
Catwood pond carries painful memories for Cricket, and as she starts to grapple with these, she finds her father morphing into an unlikely oracle – for herself, and many others.
This story is a beautiful examination of family, love, forgiveness and the ability to dream.
It is a tender exploration of Alzheimer’s as a disease – including the heartbreak and the unexpectedly comic moments.
It is this combination that makes Before I Forget into a heartwarming and beautiful read.
If you’ve ever had a family member or friend succumb to Alzheimer’s or dementia, you may find beauty in this book.
It is heartbreaking, funny and full of love. Would highly recommend it.
