Completed this for the Popsugar Reading Challenge Prompt #47 (A book told entirely through letters) and the 52 Book Club Reading Challenge Prompt #49 (from the 800s of the Dewey Decimal System).
An epistolary memoir consisting of letters exchanged between Helene Hanff and Frank Doel of Marks & Co booksellers, 84 Charing Cross Road is a beautiful story of a platonic friendship built on a love of books, which spills out into other areas of their lives.
These two perfect strangers come from different worlds – Helene, a blunt New Yorker who is very particular about her books, and Frank a quiet Englishman, book buyer, and family man.
This is a book that will make you yearn to write letters and discover new literature – especially rare editions that have previously been loved and thumbed through.
For someone like me (speaking about books and stories I love makes my heart full), this story highlights the power of books and their ability to bring people closer together.
I listened to the audiobook, but upon finishing, immediately procured a hard copy.
I feel this is a book I will return to over and over.
Happy reading!
