Dan Foster – an underachiever with chronically low self-esteem, is finally taking a vacation with his girlfriend Mara.

Everything is going great until the sun explodes, and the world is plunged into darkness.

Things go from bad to worse as a small group of residents takes control of the food supplies, and Dan finds himself an accidental figure of hope amidst the chaos.

When a six-seater plane is discovered, Dan must make the choice between saving himself and Mara, or doing what’s good for the greater good.

This is a fun book – while it has some elements of the obvious dystopia- it also has a host of colourful characters and a lot of humour.

Dan is constantly trying to be “a man” which makes you kind of cringe on his behalf, but at heart is a good person.

This is sort of a White Lotus meets Lord of the Flies meets The Ministry of Time. It is a book you can’t take all that seriously especially when it comes to suspension of disbelief.

And yet this book does make you think.

What if something like this actually happened? What kind of mayhem would result? And would people prioritise the greater good or would protecting their own take priority?

This book won’t blow your mind but it will entertain you, and you will be invested enough to stick around and find out what happens.

The suspension of disbelief gets a little hairy – especially towards the end.

And yet I enjoyed it thoroughly. Would recommend if you’re more of an easy – breezy reader, and not someone for whom, plot holes become a major distraction.

Ultimately, it is good for a light read between heavier ones. I would recommend the audio experience here.

Happy reading!
